The state of Manipur in Northeast India has been gripped by another wave of violence, leading to heightened security measures and a reduction in curfew relaxation periods.
Authorities have deployed additional army and paramilitary forces in response to the escalating situation, aiming to restore order and ensure the safety of residents.
According to a police official, armed miscreants descended upon the New Checkon area of Imphal East, where they coerced shop owners into closing their businesses under threats of violence. Shockingly, two houses were set ablaze during the incident, adding to the sense of fear and unrest among the local population.
News of these disturbing events quickly spread, prompting members of other communities to take a stand against the miscreants. Fueled by anger and frustration, an irate mob managed to apprehend and mete out retribution to one of the wrongdoers, while the others narrowly escaped capture.
In a display of rapid response, three columns comprising personnel from the Army, Assam Rifles, Manipur Police, and Rapid Action Force swiftly arrived at the scene.
They cordoned off the area, effectively bringing the situation under control.
A defense spokesman lauded the proactive and decisive action, highlighting the apprehension of three suspects and the confiscation of two single-barrel 12-bore guns, which were subsequently handed over to the police.
To curb the further escalation of violence, the district administrations of Imphal East and Imphal West have curtailed the period of curfew relaxation by three hours. These measures seek to restrict unnecessary movement and gatherings, thereby ensuring the safety and security of residents.
The Manipur government, grappling with the challenge of maintaining law and order, has extended the suspension of internet services until May 26. The decision comes in the wake of reports of arson and attacks, as well as concerns over the spread of rumors, videos, photos, and messages that could potentially inflame the situation. While the suspension of mobile internet services aims to prevent the dissemination of provocative content, it has inadvertently resulted in significant hardships for the people of Manipur. The lack of connectivity has disrupted essential services, transportation, fuel availability, and access to life-saving drugs, exacerbating an already challenging situation.
Various organizations, including the opposition Congress party and local media outlets, have been vocal in their demand for the immediate restoration of internet services in Manipur. They argue that access to information and communication is crucial, particularly during times of crisis, and that the continued suspension only serves to further isolate the region and hinder relief efforts.
Since the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur, the toll has been staggering. Seventy-one lives have been lost, with over 300 people sustaining injuries, including police personnel. The impact has been felt across 11 out of the state’s 16 districts, with six districts particularly hard-hit. Displacement figures exceed 25,000 individuals, and the destruction of nearly 1,700 houses and more than 200 vehicles has further compounded the sense of loss and devastation.
As the situation remains volatile, the authorities continue to emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and stability. Efforts are being made to restore normalcy, address the root causes of the conflict, and facilitate dialogue among different communities to foster understanding and reconciliation. (Edited)
