The students’ wing of CPIM, once again, raised its voice against the New Education Policy (NEP) and slammed the ruling BJP for its approach towards education.

In a press conference held at the Agartala state committee office of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and TSUon Wednesday, the All India general secretary of SFI, Mayukh Biswas, accused the BJP government at the centre of attempting to destroy the education sector in the country through the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP).

Biswas labelled the NEP as undemocratic and criticized its centralized approach towards education.

According to the SFI leader, the government has taken advantage of the pandemic to make anti-people decisions, including the promotion of the NEP. He argued that the New Education Policy (NEP) aims to create a division by targeting students and depriving them of their basic studies. Biswas further expressed concerns about the NEP’s potential to open up the education sector to private players, which could lead to the exclusion of economically disadvantaged students who rely on state-run educational institutions.

Taking a dig at the BJP government in Tripura, Biswas also criticized the implementation of the Mission Vidyajyoti scheme. He claimed that this scheme, which turns state-run schools into English medium schools following the CBSE pattern, adversely affects students from poor families and other disadvantaged sections of society.

Biswas argued that the introduction of the Mission Vidyajyoti scheme forces students who were previously studying in Bengali medium Tripura board-run schools to now write their examinations either in Hindi or English, posing difficulties for their continued education.

Biswas asserted that both SFI and TSU will step up their efforts to protest against the BJP government’s privatization of the education sector in Tripura. The Left Student bodies are planning to intensify their movement shortly to address the concerns arising from the government’s education policies.
