Dhankhar directed O’Brien to exit the House and announced his suspension for the rest of the session, with the House scheduled to reconvene at 12 noon.

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien has been suspended for the rest of the sessions of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, as announced by Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday.

Earlier, O’Brien, a Trinamool Congress MP, highlighted that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge had called for a discussion on Manipur.

O’Brien emphasized that if the discussion on Manipur is allowed, it would address his concern.

Responding to O’Brien’s remarks, Dhankhar directed O’Brien to take his seat and then formally named him, ordering him to leave the House due to his disruptive behavior.

O’Brien’s suspension resulted from his disorderly conduct, with Leader of the House Piyush Goyal proposing a motion for his suspension.

Goyal’s motion cited O’Brien’s continuous disruption of proceedings, disobedience to the Chair’s instructions, and ongoing disturbances in the House.

“I propose the Motion to suspend O’Brien from House proceedings for the remainder of this session due to his unseemly behavior, which is not fitting for a member of the Rajya Sabha. Today, on August 8, O’Brien’s actions of shouting slogans from the Well of the House, thereby showing disregard for the Chair’s authority and instructions, bring discredit and dishonor to this esteemed House,” stated Goyal.

Following this, Dhankhar directed O’Brien to exit the House and announced his suspension for the rest of the session, with the House scheduled to reconvene at 12 noon.

In response, Opposition MPs persisted in chanting slogans against the Chairman’s decision.

Members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) have been pressing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deliver a comprehensive statement on Manipur in both Houses of Parliament. They have also been advocating for a debate on the Manipur issue within the House.

Earlier, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was similarly suspended for the remaining duration of the session due to his disorderly conduct. (Edited)
