The Kokbarok Script issue was raised on the second day of the ongoing third Assembly session on Monday. Leader of the opposition, Animesh Debbarma said in the first Assembly session, he urged Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha who also holds Education Portfolio to ensure that candidates are allowed to write Kokbarok answer scripts in both Bengali and Roman Scripts.
However, the CBSE is still saying that only Bengali script would be allowed to write answers in Kokbarok, he told the House.
Expressing concern, Debbarma said, CBSE exams is scheduled to be held on February 15 and 5000 candidates will appear for Kokbarok exam. The confusion over using only Bengali script is putting the candidates into a difficult situation.
In reply to the issue, former Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath informed the house that CBSE had informed the department that permission to use two scripts could not be granted – only one script would be allowed.
Countering Nath’s statement, Animesh Debbarma referred to a letter 9 which was obtained through an RTI) from the Directorate of Kokbarok and Other Minority Language (OML) to the CBSE authority in New Delhi.  The letter read, “…..Even the question papers set by the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) for the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Board Examination are prepared through Bengali script. …. Hence I would inform you that the Sample question papers/Questions for CBSE examination may be prepared in Bengali script as per policy decision of the Government”.
Debbarma also pointed out that the letter, apart from concerned officials, was also signed by the then Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath.
Meantime, CPIM MLA Jitendra Choudhury said the government is pushing the 5000 students into a bleak future in planned manner.
However, Ratan Lal Nath reiterated that CBSE informed the Government that only one script- not two scripts – would be allowed to write answer sheets. He expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved before the February 15 examination.
