The Assembly was informed by Agriculture minister Ratanlal Nath on Monday that the state government had identified 1,00,960 farmers who were eligible for compensation due to the unseasonal rains in November and December of the previous year.
The Agriculture minister was responding to a calling attention notice raised by MLA Sudip Sarkar and MLA Islam Uddin on Monday, the second day of the winter session. He stated that the department had already submitted a proposal of Rs. 28,72,72,000 for compensation to the Revenue department and the insurance company.
He explained that the unseasonal rains that took place from November 16 to 18 and December 6 to 8 of the previous year had caused severe losses to the farmers across the state. The officers and staff of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare department had visited the affected areas and assessed the damage with the assistance of the three-tier panchayat system.
Nath said that the NDRF/SDRF guidelines stipulated that any farmer who suffered more than 33 percent of crop damage would receive compensation. Based on these guidelines, 97,947 farmers had been selected for compensation of Rs. 27,58,82,000 crore and the proposal had been forwarded to the Revenue department.
He also mentioned that the crops of 3,013 farmers had been damaged on the fields after harvesting due to the unseasonal rains in November and December of the previous year. They had also been included for compensation of Rs. 1,13,90,000. Nath expressed his hope that the insurance company would disburse the compensation at the earliest.
