Animesh Debbarma, the Leader of the Opposition and TIPRA Motha MLA, voiced strong criticism against the instruction issued by Dr. Dhananjoy Gon Chowdhury, the president of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), regarding the upcoming Kokborok exam.
Dr. Chowdhury recently made a statement advising students to refrain from using the Roman script in the impending Kokborok exam. This directive sparked controversy and concern, particularly among the opposition.
Debbarma, in response to Dr. Chowdhury’s instruction, expressed significant concern. He warned, “If the TBSE president issues an order prohibiting the use of the Roman script, there will be protests blocking all roads.”
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Debbarma emphasized that such a decision could ignite significant unrest in the state, leading to hardships for its residents. He warned that such actions could disrupt law and order, causing further complications for the state’s governance.
The opposition leader appealed to the government and Dr. Chowdhury to reconsider their decision, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. He highlighted that students have been accustomed to using both scripts and should be allowed to continue doing so to maintain peace.
Debbarma also expressed suspicion that there may be external influences behind Dr. Chowdhury’s decision. However, he did not provide any specific details or evidence to support this claim.
Debbarma urged the Tripura government to address the matter seriously. He emphasized the potential repercussions of Dr. Chowdhury’s decisions on governance and law enforcement within the state.
Notably, an intense debate is going on among the intellectuals and politicians of the Janajati communities regarding the script to be used in Kokborok writing. At present, both the Bengali and Roman scripts are being used.
