ProMASS: Jan 24, 2017: Taking another step towards better connectivity for remote areas, passenger train services in the newly constructed Agartala – Udaipur BG section started today. Railway Minister Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu flagged off the train through video conferencing from New Delhi.
The 44 km long Agartala – Udaipur section is part of the 112 km long new BG line project from Agartala to Sabroom. The project was sanctioned in 2008-09 at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,194 crore. Agartala – Udaipur section of the project was commissioned for goods traffic in March last year. And today, Udaipur, the erstwhile capital of Tripura, is connected with passenger train. CRS has given permission for 100 kmph speed in the section. The train flagged off today is the sixth pair of passenger train in the state. Chief Public Relations Officer, Pranav Jyoti Sharma informed this in a press release.
Inaugurating the the service, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said, Union Government will take initiative to run trains between Tripureswari of Udaipur and Kamakhya of Guahati. Having said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been emphasizing development of North East, he stated, construction works of extending train lines upto Sabroom in South Tripura is going on full swing.
During the inauguration programme, Minister for Revenue Badal Choudhury, Minister of Transport Manik Dey, Lok Sabha MPs Sankar Prasad Datta and Jitendra Choudhury were also present. The Revenue Minister Badal Choudhury thanked the Union Railway Minister on this occasion while Transport Minister Manik Dey said, demand stations at Bagma and Shalgarah will be placed in near future.
A pair of passenger train will ply between Agartala and Udaipur everyday except Sunday. Notably, rail distance between Agartala and Udaipur is 44 KM and it takes 1 hr 10 min to reach the destination.
