Agartala (Tripura) June 1: Incessant rainfall over the last 48 hours has claimed life of one person in Agartala while more than 1300 families in the West Tripura District took refuge to government-run relief camps, officials said.

Rescue and relief operations are underway while disaster management teams have been kept ready to assist.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said the government is closely monitoring the situation. He also said in the wake of relentless downpour, drainage water pumps were used to clear water in the submerged areas.

Tragically, a young man is reported to have drowned in floodwaters near Jackson Gate in Agartala late Saturday evening.

Synopsis: Incessant rainfall over 48 hours in West Tripura has caused severe flooding, with the Haora River exceeding its danger level of 10.50 meters, reaching 10.82 meters at Jahar Bridge Gauge Station. Over 1,300 families in Agartala have been evacuated to government-run relief camps following widespread waterlogging. One person drowned in floodwaters near Jackson Gate. Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is closely monitoring the situation, with NDRF, SDRF, and volunteers deployed for rescue and relief operations.

According to the latest reports, the Haora River has surpassed its danger level. As of 9 a.m. on Sunday, the water level was recorded at 10.82 meters at the Jahar Bridge Gauge Station, exceeding the 10.50-meter danger threshold.

In his facebook post, Dr Manik Saha wrote, Continuous rainfall has caused flooding in various parts of the state, particularly in West District, where several areas have been inundated, leading to the evacuation of citizens to safer locations. The administration is taking necessary measures everywhere.

He wrote, “Approximately 1,300 families have taken shelter in government relief centers. The government is closely monitoring the flood-affected areas.

The district administration has deployed NDRF/SDRF, civil volunteers, and other agencies in various locations. Water accumulation has also occurred in several areas of Agartala, and water pumps are operational.

People in the flood-affected areas are being urged to follow government instructions and seek shelter in safe locations”.

An official update from the West Tripura District Magistrate’s office stated that in response to widespread waterlogging and torrential rain, continuous rescue operations are being carried out across vulnerable areas under the supervision of the district administration.

Emergency response teams, including SDRF units, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and trained volunteers, are working tirelessly to evacuate residents, distribute relief materials, and ensure the safety of the public.

The administration is also coordinating with all relevant departments to address urgent needs on the ground.

Personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, Civil Defence, along with local volunteers, have been mobilized to assist in relief operations across the flood-affected zones.

Dr Saha visited several flood hit areas along the Haora River in Agartala on Sunday. He also inspected Swami Dayalananda Vidy niketan (Dhaleshwar), Ramthakur Pathsala Higher Secondary Girls’ School (Pratapgarh), Vivekananda Vidyamandir (Bardowali), B.R. Ambedkar Higher Secondary School, (Joynagar), Pragati Vidyabhavan, (Krishnanagar), Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ School and Netaji Adarsha Shiksha Mandir, (Ward No. 32).

The Chief Minister appealed to residents living in low-lying and waterlogged areas to adhere to official advisories and move to designated safe shelters for their own safety.
