The Young Mizo Association (YMA) is the largest non‑political, non‑profit and secular organisation of the Mizo people, focusing on preserving heritage, serving the community, and upholding Christian ethics. It was founded in 15 June 1935 by Welsh Christian missionaries and local Mizo leaders. Headquartered in Aizawl, Mizoram, the organisation encompasses 5 sub‑headquarters, over 700 branches, and over 400,000 members across Mizoram and neighbouring states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura.
In Tripura alone, there are total 19 branches, ten of those in Jampui Hill and nine in Unakoti district in and around Darchawi town.
The abbreviation of the organisation’s name “YMA” itself is a brand of its own which has: Proper utilization of leisure, Development of the Mizo community, and Reverence for Christian ethics, as its three core aims.
YMA is also the organisation that practically lives out the core value of Mizo society known as “Tlawmngaihna”, a term which has no direct English equivalent. It is the deeply cherished Mizo ethical and cultural code – a spirit of selflessness, communal duty, and unspoken generosity, central to Mizo identity. It embodies being ethical, courteous, courageous, and willing to sacrifice personal comfort for the sake of others.
