Indo-Pak conflict: Trump's 'I Stopped a War' Claim Faces Stiff Rebuttal from India at UNSC

Summary

  • US Credits Itself: Shea claimed that US leadership under Trump played a crucial role in de-escalating tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, allegedly preventing a potential nuclear conflict.
  • India Rejects Claim: India strongly denied any foreign involvement, stating that the ceasefire was the result of direct bilateral communication with Pakistan.

United Nations Jul 23: Was it Trump’s effort or direct bilateral initiatives after Pakistan’s request for de-escalation of Indo-Pak conflict preventing a war during ‘Operation Sindoor’ following Pahalgam terrorist attack?

United States brought the issue at the United Nations Security Council and United States official reiterated US President Donald Trump’s claim of averting a potential Indo-Pak war. India, however, has once again dismissed the assertion, stating that the conflict was resolved directly between New Delhi and Islamabad without any foreign mediation.

Acting US Representative Dorothy Shea credited Trump while India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish vehemently denied this reiterating that Pakistan requested for de-escalation using direct bilateral channel.

Trump’s Repeated Boast of ‘Stopping a War’

Donald Trump has frequently claimed that his intervention prevented what he described as a near-nuclear confrontation between the two South Asian rivals. At the Security Council’s open debate on “Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes,” Acting US Representative Dorothy Shea echoed this narrative, crediting Trump’s leadership for de-escalating tensions after a terror attack in Pahalgam.

According to Shea, “Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States played an important role in encouraging the parties to reach a resolution, which we both applaud and support.”

Shea listed the India-Pakistan conflict among three global crises — alongside tensions between Israel and Iran, and Congo and Rwanda — that the US claims were defused due to Trump’s diplomatic interventions.

India’s Firm Rebuttal: No Role for Third-Party Mediation

India responded sharply to the claim, reiterating that no third party was involved in defusing the situation. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, stated unequivocally that the cessation of hostilities occurred solely at Pakistan’s request and through direct bilateral engagement.

“The halt of Operation Sindoor was concluded directly following a request from Pakistan,” Harish said, underscoring that the Indian military response was “measured, focused, and non-escalatory,” targeting terrorist infrastructure responsible for the massacre of 26 civilians in Pahalgam by The Resistance Front—a Pakistan-backed group.

Modi Clarified No Mediation Took Place

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also pushed back against the Trump narrative. The ministry said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a phone call with Trump, clearly conveyed that at no point was there any discussion of US mediation or any linkage with a trade deal.

“Prime Minister Modi made it clear to President Trump that there was no conversation, at any level, regarding a US-brokered mediation between India and Pakistan, nor was there any proposal involving a trade quid pro quo,” the ministry said in an official statement.

Pakistan Asked for Ceasefire: Jaishankar Confirms

Supporting India’s stance, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar disclosed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations, Major General Kashif Abdullah, directly contacted his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, to request a ceasefire—further discrediting the US claim of playing peacemaker.

US Designates TRF as Global Terror Group

Amid the debate, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio—who also echoed Trump’s claim of averting a nuclear crisis—announced last week that Washington has designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a global terrorist organization. This move was positioned as part of the Trump administration’s commitment to justice for victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. (Edited)
