Focus on handloom heritage to empower indigenous women of Tripura
Agartala Nov 8: Tripura government is focusing on rich handloom tradition and heritage to harness livelihood options and empower of the indigenous people of the State. Encouraging the indigenous women to utilize the earning avenue, the State Government introduced Chief Minister’s Tribal Women Weavers Development Programme. As part of the initiative, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha attended an event at Killa in Gomati District on November 7.
Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said, guided by the Prime Minister’s vision of inclusive growth and empowerment, the State Government has launched several initiatives aimed at ensuring holistic development in the Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas and Janajati (Indigenous) people.
In a facebook post he wrote, “Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, our Janajati brothers and sisters are witnessing a new era of progress and prosperity.
Our Government has undertaken multiple initiatives for the holistic development of ADC areas – a transformation that is now visible in the smiles and aspirations of Janajati communities across the state.”
Chief Minister Dr Saha has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to inclusive growth and presentation information about budgetary allocations for the growth of indigenous people and strengthening Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region.
Tripura’s development is not possible without uplifting the Janajati communities, he said and added, over 40 per cent of the 2025–26 state budget has been earmarked for the development and welfare of indigenous-inhabited regions.
Quoting the Chief Minister, IANS reported that during the 2024–25 financial year, the state allocated Rs 6,645 crore — about 39.06 per cent of the total Rs 27,000 crore budget — for indigenous-inhabited regions (TTAADC) and about Rs 6,500 crore was spent. The allocation, for the current fiscal (2025–26), has risen to Rs 7,149 crore, reflecting the government’s uninterrupted emphasis on the holistic progress of the TTAADC.

The Chief Minister said that the government’s approach goes beyond infrastructure and includes welfare measures for community leaders. After the BJP came to power in 2018, an honorary allowance of Rs 2,000 was introduced for Janajati leaders, which was increased to Rs 5,000 following a recent Cabinet decision.
CM Saha said, “We want the overall development of the Janajati people. The BJP-led government does not want to do any kind of politics with the Janajatis.”
