Tripura shift focus to eco-friendly industrial growth
Agartala, Dec 05: Tripura is gearing up for a shift toward eco-friendly industrial growth, with Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha underscoring the need to prioritise production of biodegradable and environmentally friendly goods. During a review meeting of the Tripura Small Industries Corporation (TSIC), held at the Secretariat Conference Hall on Thursday, the Chief Minister highlighted that future industrial growth must align with sustainable practices to ensure long-term ecological balance.
Dr. Saha stressed that the state should explore innovative approaches to industrialisation instead of relying solely on conventional methods. With Tripura endowed with rich natural resources—including forest produce, rubber, tea and pineapple—he said the time has come to leverage these materials for manufacturing products that are both commercially viable and environmentally responsible.
“Given the present situation, we must shift our focus to eco-friendly production. Biodegradable goods need to be at the core of our industrial strategy,” Dr. Saha emphasised. He added that adopting green production methods would not only protect the environment but also open new markets and investment opportunities for Tripura.
As part of a broader plan to strengthen the local economy through sustainable means, the Chief Minister announced that an auction centre would soon be established to boost pineapple exports to markets outside the state. He further suggested organising a pineapple festival to promote the fruit as a major commercial asset. Alongside this, Dr. Saha advised the TSIC to explore the feasibility of setting up matchmaking units and spice-processing factories using locally available crops and resources.

Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, along with TSIC Chairman and MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma, presented a detailed overview of the corporation’s ongoing activities and future roadmap during the session. Senior officials including Industries and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte, Chief Minister’s Secretary Dr. P.K. Chakraborty, Finance Secretary Apurba Roy, TSIC Managing Director and other departmental representatives were also present.
With the state leadership placing clear emphasis on green production, Tripura appears poised to move toward an industrial ecosystem where development and environmental preservation advance hand in hand.
