Agartala May 15: Tripura’s chess prodigy Arshia Das has scripted her name in the annals of chess by earning her first International Master (IM) norm on Thursday. She is the first female chess player from Northeast India to reach this prestigious milestone. The young chess sensation crossed the qualifying rating of 2200 during her stellar performance at the Asian Individual Women’s Chess Championship held in Al Ain, Dubai, from May 6 to 15, 2025.
A Milestone Performance at the Asian Championship
The Asian Individual Women’s Chess Championship, a highly competitive nine-round tournament, brought together 100 elite chess players from 33 countries, including 85 titleholders such as Grandmasters, International Masters, and Woman Grandmasters. Arshia, representing India, delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 5 points and boosting her rating by an impressive 40 points, elevating her from a previous rating of 2177 to surpass the 2200 threshold required for an IM norm.
Her achievement is a testament to her skill, determination, and strategic prowess, as she competed against some of the finest talents in women’s chess. According to FIDE regulations, crossing the 2200 rating mark qualifies a player for an IM norm, and Arshia’s performance secured her first of three norms needed to claim the full International Master title.
Arshia’s Journey: From Tripura to Global Stages
Hailing from Tripura, a state in Northeast India not traditionally known for producing chess champions, Arshia Das has shattered stereotypes and regional barriers. Her rise to prominence is a story of resilience, talent, and unwavering support from her family, coaches, and community.
Reflecting on her achievement, Arshia spoke with humility and ambition over a phone call from Dubai:
“I’m thrilled with this milestone, but I know I have to go further. I seek the blessings and support of the people of my state and country. With their encouragement, I’m determined to fulfill my dreams.”

Overcoming Financial Hurdles with Community Support
Arshia’s journey to Dubai was not without challenges. Financial constraints initially threatened her participation in the Asian Championship. However, at a critical juncture, Bharat Pharmacy Technology, a Tripura-based company, stepped in with a generous contribution of Rs 2 lakh. The company’s director, Rahul Debnath, played a pivotal role in ensuring Arshia could compete on the international stage.

This act of corporate social responsibility highlights the importance of community support in nurturing young talent, especially in regions where access to resources for sports like chess can be limited.
Mentorship and Aspirations for Grandmaster Glory
Arshia’s success is also a reflection of the guidance she has received from her coach, FIDE Master Prasenjit Dutta, at the Metrics Chess Academy in Tripura. Congratulating his protégé, Dutta expressed unwavering confidence in her future:
“Arshia’s dedication and talent are unmatched. I firmly believe she will become the first Grandmaster from Northeast India, bringing pride to our region and the country.”

Arshia Das: A Trailblazer for Women in Chess
Arshia’s milestone comes at a time when Indian chess is witnessing a golden era, with players like D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, and Koneru Humpy making waves globally. As the first female chess player from Northeast India to earn an IM norm, Arshia is paving the way for greater representation of women and players from underrepresented regions in the sport.
