Adv Dilip Sarkar Memorial Debate : High-Profile Panel Examines Need for Control of Social Media

Advocate Dilip Sarkar memorial debate 2024, titled “National Interest Demands Control of Social Media” was held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan on Friday. 

The programme was inaugurated by State Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury. Among others, Judge of the High Court of Tripura, Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairperson of the Tripura Human Rights Commission Retd Justice S C Das, Advocate General of Tripura, Shaktimoy Chakraborty and Eminent Cardiac Surgeon of Kolkata Dr Kunal Sarkar were present.

Adv-Dilip-Sarkar-Memorial-DebateIn his inaugural speech, Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted several aspects of social media and said he firmly and vehemently is in favour of controlling the social media for national interests. “In my personal capacity, I can tell you that I strongly feel controlling social media is needed”.

Justice Lodh emphasized the significant role of social media in modern life, noting its immense influence on society. He highlighted the critical importance of regulating the content shared on these platforms, stating, "The Constitution grants us freedom of speech, but it also imposes reasonable restrictions. In my opinion, no freedom should be unfettered. We must learn to use social media responsibly for the betterment of society."

Addressing the audience, Shaktimoy Chakraborty and Justice SC Das focused on the life and vision of advocate late Dilip Sarkar. They deliberated on Sarkar’s expertise and knowledge regarding the art of argument in the court and willingness to help the younger lawyers.

On behalf of the Dilip Sarkar Memorial Foundation, senior advocate and chief of the event, Subrata Sarkar said that Radio Mirchi content creator from Kolkata, Agnijit Sen, noted author and orator from West Bengal, Chandril Bhatacharjee, Tripura’s renowned Diabetologist, Dr. Basab Ghosh, Asst. Professor from Tripura University, Dr. Sayak Mukherjee, Asst. Professor Dr. Ripon Bhatacharjee of National Law University, Tripura, Lawyer Rajashree Purkayastha, Senior marketing manager LIC, Nabarun Ghosh and Dr. Jayanta Dhar participated in the debate as panellists and cardiac surgeon from Kolkata Dr. Kunal Sarkar played the role of moderator.
