Asian Junior Championship: Ashmita of Tripura wins Bronze

Tripura player scripted success in sports at the International level. Pride of Tripura, Asmita Dey secured a Bronze medal in Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Championship at Bangkok in Thailand on Wednesday. Ashmita Dey the first Judo player from Tripura to be selected for the Indian team and subsequently to win a medal in the international competition.

Ashmita-Dey-Junior-Judo-Champion-TripuraJudokas of much favourite China, Japan Korea and other Asian countries including India took part in the competition. Ashmita Dey competed in 48 kg category and won the Bronze medal.

 

The 19-year old Judoka, Ashita Dey defeated Ngamluan Pimngam of Thailand and won the Bronze medal.

 

Two other Indian players – Kumar Arun and Leishangthem Nungshithoi Chanu won Silver medals for India in 73 kg and 57 kg categories respectively.

 

Apart from Ashmita Dey, another female player of the Indian team, Huidrom Matouleibi Devi also won a Bronze medal in 52 kg category.

 

In the Asian Junior Championship, total 163 competitors of 15 countries took part. Among them 91 were male while 72 were female Judokas. From India, an 18-member team comprising 9men and 9 women Judoka took part in the championship.

 

The Championship started at Bangkok on July 20 and will be ended on July 21. After the first day of the competition India secured the 5th position with 2 silvers and 2 bronze medals. Uzbekistan is leading the table with 3 Gold and 3 Bronze medals.

 

Notably, Asmita won gold in the 48 kg category in the All-India Khelo India Judo competition for Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal University. She is a former talented student of Tripura Sports School. The people of Madhya Pradesh and Tripura are proud of her success. Asmita’s first guru in sports was Bina Debnath of Belonia Vidyapith Coaching Centre in South Tripura District followed by Judo coach Manik Lal Deb of Tripura Sports School.
