Tripura University’s women's football team secured a victory over the host team, National Sports University Manipur on Sunday advancing to the group final of the Eastern Zone University Women's Football Tournament.
Tripura University emerged victorious in a closely contested match with a narrow margin. Both teams played aggressively from the start, creating a tense and exciting atmosphere. Despite facing early challenges, Tripura University managed to maintain possession and control the game.
In the third minute of the game, Tripura launched their first attack. But the opponent's goalkeeper thwarted Tripura University's attack. Then the NSU girls started playing touch football on the ground. Tripura University girls also started to match pace. But at one point, the control of the ball shifted from the Tripura girls to NSU. Tripura University's coach, Madhumita Lodh, implemented a strategic plan to capitalize on long passes, allowing her team to regain control of the match.
In the second half, the intensity and pace of the game increased as both teams fought for a decisive goal. Meanwhile, the referee showed a yellow card to the coach of the National Sports University team.
With just two minutes remaining, Tripura University was awarded a corner. Anjali Debbarma, the team's co-captain, delivered a precise corner kick, which was expertly headed into the net by Mousumi Orang, Tripura's left winger.
Despite facing physical challenges and a foggy field, Tripura University displayed exceptional teamwork and determination throughout the match.
Tripura University is now in the group finals. On Monday, they will play the All India Qualifying match against the previous semi-finalist, LM Mithila University.
The coach expressed concern about the fitness of several players. She said, "The girls played brilliantly. But we are a bit worried before the next match because several players in the team are injured. Among them, Anjali Debbarma's injury is serious. But I believe the girls will play well against LM Mithila University as they did today and take the team to the main round. I'm telling the girls to be confident, not overconfident."
