GBP Hospital Doctors Perform Life-Saving Surgery on Newborn with Record Low Birth Weight

The doctors and health workers of the Pediatrics Department at Agartala's premier referral facility, GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College, achieved a laudable feat: They saved the life of a newborn baby with an Extremely Low Birth weight (ELB) of only 670 grams. The doctors successfully performed critical surgery on the baby, who now holds the hospital's record for the lowest birth weight.

The baby was born at the Dhalai District Hospital with ELB weight on August 7 and was referred to the GBP Hospital. A dedicated team of doctors at GBP Hospital worked around the clock to ensure the child’s recovery, showcasing both their exceptional medical expertise and their commitment to patient care.

During a press conference at GB Hospital on Thursday, the medical team shared their experiences and the challenges they overcame during the surgery.

They expressed both pride and satisfaction in their accomplishment, highlighting how advanced medical techniques and collaborative teamwork were essential to achieving such a remarkable outcome.

The newborn weighed less than 1000 grams at birth, and had been under close medical supervision for the past three months. We are thrilled to have successfully performed surgery on the baby to save its life."

“This successful procedure not only highlights the capabilities of Agartala GBP Hospital but also inspires confidence within the medical community and among families. It stands as a proof of the hospital's dedication to providing excellent healthcare services,” he added.

Commending the medical team on their achievement, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha wrote on social media, "A remarkable milestone has been reached by GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College. They saved the life of a newborn who weighed just 670 grams when born at Dhalai District Hospital on August 7, 2024. Today, the child, now at a healthy 1.490 kg baby, serves as a testament to the extraordinary medical skill and dedication of the healthcare team."

"This astounding achievement is a proud addition to the accomplishments of both institutions, reflecting the relentless efforts and exceptional expertise of the medical professionals involved. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the hospital authorities and the entire medical team for reaching this significant milestone. Their success marks not only a momentous occasion for the families but also establishes a unique benchmark in pediatric care in the state,” he added.
