GBP Hospital Joins Hands with Mohan Foundation, Life-Saving Organ Transplants in Tripura soon

Tripura's healthcare sector is poised for a major leap forward as the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital prepare to introduce liver and other organ transplantation services.

This significant initiative, aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and quality, will be facilitated by Chennai’s Mohan Foundation at GBP Hospital.

This advancement is largely credited to the dedicated efforts of Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, who has been instrumental in driving the organ donation and transplantation agenda forward, said Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of AGMC and GBP Hospital, during a press conference in Agartala on Thursday.

He elaborated that the Mohan Foundation Multi Organ Harvesting Networking Institution from Chennai, a nationally and internationally acclaimed organization, will spearhead this crucial project in Tripura.

In a step toward raising awareness and ensuring a smooth implementation, a high-level workshop was recently organized under the patronage of Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, bringing together key stakeholders.

The Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of collective cooperation to make this initiative successful.

Dr. Chakraborty highlighted that organ donation and transplantation have been practiced in India for years, and Tripura has already witnessed two successful kidney transplants, performed on July 8th and November 11th last year.

The state is now taking further steps to integrate a robust organ transplantation program with the expertise and collaboration of the Mohan Foundation.

Addressing the pressing need for organ donation, Dr. Chakraborty revealed that accidents remain a leading cause of mortality in the state.

In 2023 alone, 98 individuals lost their lives at GBP Hospital’s trauma center, a number that rose to 111 in 2024.

Many of these fatalities involved brain deaths, highlighting the potential for organ donation. However, the process requires consent from families, making public awareness and motivation essential.

Dr. Chakraborty emphasized the importance of treating organ donation as a vital aspect of medical advancement, similar to blood donation.

Organs such as the heart can be successfully transplanted post-brain death, provided the necessary legal and familial approvals are secured.

He explained that a Brain Death Committee must be formed, with certification from four doctors, to validate organ donation eligibility after brain death. If the heart continues to function, it can be preserved for transplantation.

Pallabi Kumar, Executive Director of the Mohan Foundation, stressed the need for a well-structured infrastructure and trained personnel to guide families in making informed decisions regarding organ donation.

She also highlighted the critical role of media in spreading awareness and fostering a culture of organ donation. Educational institutions, youth organizations, and service clubs such as Lions and Rotary can play a significant role in promoting this cause.

Professor (Dr.) Anup Kumar Saha, Principal of AGMC, extended gratitude to the Mohan Foundation for their support, expressing optimism that the collaboration would significantly enhance Tripura’s healthcare infrastructure and services.

The press conference saw the participation of several distinguished officials, including Professor (Dr.) Anup Kumar Saha, Professor (Dr.) Deepak Gupta from AIIMS, New Delhi, Pallabi Kumar from the Mohan Foundation, Deputy Medical Superintendents Dr. Kanak Choudhury, Dr. Manirul Islam, Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Deputy Director of Administration Gideon Malsom, and Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Bikash Deb Barma, among others.

With this initiative, Tripura is set to mark a new milestone in its healthcare journey, offering new hope to patients in need of life-saving organ transplants.
