The death toll in the Kanchanjungha Express-goods train collision has risen to eight, said officials on Monday.
According to the Additional Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling district, Abhishek Roy, the dead include the loco pilot of the goods train that had hit the Kanchanjungha Express.
Roy did not rule out the possibility of the death figure increasing as the rescue operations continued. So far the number of injured was over 30, he said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the railway mishap in West Bengal. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
The Government of Tripura has also announced ex-gratia. In a social media post, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha wrote, “Cost of treatment of all injured will be borne by the State government.
In case of any unfortunate accidental death, State Government has declared Rs. 2 lakhs ex-gratia payment to the next to kin of the victim”.
Dr Saha also said, “Spoke with Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji regarding the collision of Kanchanjungha Express with Goods train in New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
Hon’ble Union Minister informed me that rescue operation is going on in full swing and assured that all necessary support would be given to the victims and their families.
Dr Saha also announced, “State Government continuously monitoring the situation since morning.
Tripura Bhawan officials instructed to visit accident site for proper monitoring of rescue and rehabilitation of accident victims.
Cost of treatment of all injured will be borne by the State government
In case of any unfortunate accidental death, State Government has declared Rs. 2 lakhs ex-gratia payment to the next to kin of the victim.
