One person suspected to be a thief lynched in Tripura

The apprehension has indeed come true. One person suspected to be a thief has been lynched by villagers of Ram Durga Sardar Para in Jirania sub-division in Tripura.

 

The deceased has not been identified yet. Jirania police, however, confirmed arrests of three persons in connection with the lynching incident that took place on Thursday late night.

 

When contacted, a duty officer from Jirania police station said that they had received a call from Ram Durga Sardar Para that a thief was caught by the locals.

 

“When we reached the spot, we found that the person was lying in a serious condition. Police staff along with Fire Service personnel shifted the person to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead. The body was kept at morgue of GBP hospital for identification.”

 

According to police sources, the person had knocked the door at the home of Nandi Debbarma late at night. When the house owner opened the door, he found the person was not known to him. The house owner suspected the person as a thief and caught him. In the meantime, when the house owner started shouting for help, the local villagers assembled there and beaten the suspected person to death.

 

The police officer said, preliminary investigation suggests that the man might have been mentally deranged.

 

He said, three persons- Nandi Debbarma, Bishu Debbarma and Dulal Debbarma were arrested in connection with the lynching on Friday.

 

Meanwhile, there were reports of two other incidents where two persons were beaten up by villagers on suspicion of thieves. The incidents were reported from Chandrapur and Airport areas. (Courtesy: Tripura Times)
