Oxygen issue: Sudip visits GBP Hospital in Agartala on late Friday night

BJP MLA and former health minister Sudip Roy Barman on Saturday alleged that lack of trained manpower remained the prime contributing factor behind the frequent technical snags in GBP hospital Agartala.

According to Roybarman, he received several calls from GB Hospital complaining that central oxygen system could not supply adequate oxygen to the patients last night and accordingly, went there alongside a biomedical instrument engineer. The things were restored in half an hour. Ratul Dey, the engineer also later explained as to why these problems were reappearing time and again in the state’s biggest Covid care system.

MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “Last night at around 1 AM, I had received three calls from Covid hospital, GBP hospital. Patients were unable to breathe as some technical faults reported in the central oxygen system of the hospital. They also informed me that many of their calls to authorities went unanswered and in some cases phones were switched off. Immediately, I had contacted Ratul Dey, the lone biomedical instrumental engineer of the state. Dey, along with me, went there and saw that the reading on the oxygen meter was ‘zero’ and around half an hour he worked in the manifold room and fixed the matter”.

The MLA, on being asked on the repeated reports of technical problems arising in the GBP hospital time and again, said that there were no trained people in the hospital to look after the technical issues. “See as of my knowledge, there are no technical people having requisite qualifications to look after the technical issues of machines installed in the hospital. Ratul Dey, who is the only biomedical engineer is not absorbed by any of the governments (neither previous nor the incumbent). So many of the costly machines say mobile X- ray machine, X-ray machine, CT Scan machine are out of order due to the absence of trained people”, he added. (Courtesy: Tripura Times)
