Rajya Sabha: Biplab Kumar Deb demands reopening of Border Haats in Tripura, flays Bihar Govt on hooch tragedy
Rajya Sabha MP from Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb raised border haat issue of Tripura and Bihar hooch tragedy in the Upper House on Thursday (Dec 15).
While speaking in the Parliament, Deb demanded reopening of Kamalasagar and Srinagar border haats in Tripura which were closed during the Covid pandemic. He also demanded speedy completion works of proposed Kamalpur and Dharmanagar border haats.
Deb said, Kamalasagar and Srinagar border haats are the centre of tourist attractions as well as the source of livelihood for many people. In these haats, local vendors of Tripura and Bangladesh come to sell their local products.
“Even as border haat in Meghalaya was opened after Covid situation was normalized, Kamalasagar and Srinagar border haats in Tripura are yet to be opened”, Deb said and urged the Central Government to take up the issue with the Bangladesh Government.
Biplab Kumar Deb also said, there are Joint Border haat Committees, in which officials of both countries are members, to oversee the functioning of the haats.
Even as Tripura is keen to re-open the haats, no response could be obtained from the Bangladesh administration. Moreover, Bangladesh did not announce the reason behind not re-opening the haats.
As the closure of the haats is affecting the livelihood of people, Deb drew the attention of the Industry Ministry to communicate with its Bangladesh counterpart and take necessary steps.
In this connection, the Rajya Sabha MP from Tripura also demanded to start the border haat works in Kamalpur and Dharmanagar at the earliest.
Earlier, Biplab Kumar Deb raised the hooch tragedy in Bihar and came down heavily on Nitish Kumar-led government there. He demanded to look into the hooch issue with utmost seriousness. Most of the members of the House supported Deb and slammed Bihar Government on this issue.
Biplab Kumar Deb, after being elected as the Rajya Sabha MP from Tripura is regularly raising issues and projects pertaining to Tripura. He already raised the Kailashahar Airport issue in the Rajya Sabha. Besides, Deb is also talking about sensitive national issues.
In the past, MPs from Tripura were hardly seen raising voice for the interest of the State - however, Biplab Kumar Deb is regularly standing up in the Upper House and raising demands for the development and welfare of people.
