For the first time, oncological surgeons - all are inhabitants of Tripura - successfully performed a critical oncological surgery on a 60-year-old male patient at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre (ABV RCC).
A male patient, Munna Singh (60) was suffering from cancer in the windpipe larynx- Chondrosarcoma Larynx.
Doctors said this is a rare type of cancer. The patient went to Thakurpukura Cancer hospital in Kolkata and later to Silchar for treatment - but he did not receive treatment and his condition deteriorated, relatives of Munna Singh said.
Meantime, all the cartilage of the larynx was destroyed and his condition became critical (Stage 4).
After intense discussion, Oncological surgeons - Dr Amlan Debbarma, Dr Rahul Deb, Dr Sailat Sen, Dr Rakesh Tripura along with anaesthetists – Dr Mrinal Kanti Debbarma and Dr Partha Debbarma, decided to conduct surgery and successfully performed a 7-hour long surgery on at the ABV-RCC on Tuesday(Jan 31). According to the sources, the patient is doing well.
After the successful surgery, life expectancy of the patient will considerably improve and further course of treatment will be decided based on examination of the extracted cancer affected portion, doctors said.
Even as several successful surgeries were done at the ABV RCC on earlier occasions, all those surgeries were conducted by oncological surgeons from other States.
Dr Amlan Debbarma-led team is the first medical team in which all the members hail from Tripura. In a sense, the ABV RCC has achieved self-reliance in the case of Oncological surgeries.
Apart from Head and Neck, ABV RCC now also has oncological surgery teams for Gynecology and Gestro Intestine (GI) related issues comprising son of the soil.
Dr Atanu Sarkar is looking after Gynecological surgeries while Dr Subhajit Das and Dr Suman Das are in GI.
