Communal tensions flared up in Pekucherra under the North Tripura District on Tuesday after a Shiva temple and a mosque were vandalized.

Security forces were deployed in large numbers, and internet and text message services were suspended for three days. There is no report of any arrest, so far.

The unrest started late on Monday night when unknown individuals damaged a Shiva temple in Pekucherra.

This sparked serious repercussions among the locals and early Tuesday morning, villagers retaliated by attacking a nearby mosque and ransacked. Tensions quickly escalated as news of the incidents spread.

The area had already been tense after a recent rape of a Hindu girl. Two suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime.  But the people were in anguish and the temple vandalism further inflamed the situation.

The SP of North Tripura arrived promptly to calm the situation, and while the initial violence was contained, tensions remained high.

Adequate police and security forces were deployed to maintain law and order. Although the situation was reportedly under control, the atmosphere remained tense. Authorities were closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.

The SP of North Tripura Bhanupada was closed to police headquarters, and the SP of Dhalai was given additional charge of the North Tripura district.

Moreover in a notification, Government suspended the internet, text message, and press message services for three days starting at 5 PM on Tuesday.
