A heart-wrenching appeal has been made to the Tripura Chief Minister, Professor Dr. Manik Saha, by a journalist body on Thursday.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Tripura Journalist Union president Pranab Sarkar highlighted the plight of families who had lost their media-person breadwinners.
Over the past year, the state witnessed the untimely demise of several media persons due to various causes, including illnesses and accidents.
Prominent among them are Abdul Sattar from Sonamura, Manash Bhattacharya from Khowai, and photojournalist Debashis Baruah.
The letter also mentioned other journalists who passed away in recent time.
“The most distressing aspect of this situation is the financial hardship faced by the bereaved families”, the letter mentioned and added, “Many of these families are struggling to make ends meet, with some even resorting to semi-starvation. The education of the children of these deceased journalists is also severely impacted”.
In view of critical financial conditions of deceased journalists’ families, Sarkar urged the Chief Minister to conduct a thorough investigation for collecting information about the distressed families and to extend immediate financial assistance to their families. Pranab Sarkar also requested the government to provide government jobs to one member of each affected family.
The letter concluded with a heartfelt appeal to the Chief Minister to consider the plight of these families from a humanitarian perspective and to take swift action. The entire journalistic community of the state is looking forward to a positive response from the Chief Minister.
