Tripura News: Boy drowned in Khowai River during immersion

In a tragic incident, one minor boy drowned in Khowai River at Teliamura area under the Khowai district on Sunday afternoon.

A 16-year old boy, Anirban Pal, drowned in the Khowai River during the immersion of a ‘holy pot’ of Bipadnashini Puja on Sunday afternoon. The body of the deceased is yet to be recovered.

Meanwhile, Chief whip of Tripura State Assembly Kalyan Roy intervened and took steps to shut the gates of the Chakma Ghat barrage located downstream of the River. She also initiated action to bring the NDRF team from Agartala for recovering the body of the boy.

Local sources said, Bipadnashini Puja was held at the residence of one Tinku Pal on Saturday. Today, Anirban Pal, son of Tinku Pal went to Khowai River near Joynagar Forest Office area to immerse the ‘holy pot’ of Bipadnashini Puja. He along with three friends, after immersion of the ‘pot’, was playing in the river. However, the strong undercurrent of the River pulled them deeper into the river.

One of them managed to swim to safety while Anirban and the other one were flowing down.

A local youth noticed it and jumped into the River. The local youth managed to rescue Anirban’s friend, but  Anirban who did not know how to swim vanished into the river.

Later, Fire service personnel in presence of Teliamura SDM, SDPO and other officials searched for the boy in vain. Meanwhile, the NDRF team of TSR 12 bn also joined in the search operation. But the body remained untraced till the report filing.
