Violence in Tripura: Fact Finding Panel meets Guv, highlights prevailing Law and Order situation

The seven-member Fact-Finding Panel demanded intervention of Governor of Tripura Satyadeo Narain Arya for ending the ‘political hostility’ and restoring peace. The Panel also demanded action against the perpetrators and government relief for the victims of political violence in the State.

The Panel led by Rajya Sabha MP Elaram Karim and accompanied by CPIM-Congress MLAs and AICC leaders submitted a memorandum to the Governor highlighting several incidences of post poll violence that hit different areas in the State after the announcement of Assembly Poll results on March 2 last.

Along with listing instances of violence committed upon the Opposition Party supporters and workers, the Panle also pointed out that the visiting Fact-Finding Panel was attacked by BJP activists at Nehalchandra Nagar Bazar in Bishalgarh on Saturday. The team also faced resistence while touring the Mohanpur area near Agartala. Following these incidences, the Panel was compelled to abandon further inspection.

In view of the present ‘horrendous’ state of law and order situation in the State, the Panel members urged the Governor to initiate steps for restoring peace and maintaining law and order.

The 7-member Panel arrived in Agartala on Friday on a two-day visit to get a first-hand experience on the post poll violence in the State.

Later speaking to the media, Karim said they would raise the issue of post poll violence in the Parliament as well as highlight it before the national media.

Karim said, violence in Tripura is showing a dangerous trend as the BJP-RSS backed goons are not only physically attacked but victims’ livelihood are also destroyed. He listed out several instances of burning of shops, e-rickshaw, rubber plantations etc.

“The present situation in the State is due to the intolerance cultivated by the BJP-RSS in the country. This intolerance is destroying the democracy and secularism in the country”, Karim said.

Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan, addressing the media raised allegations against the police and administration for playing an inactive role when common men are terrified by the "BJP backed hoodlums".

The Panle members demanded adequate compensation for the victims suffered in the hands of the BJP backed goons. The compensation should be decided as per the recommendation of an all party committee. The assessment of losses should be done as immediately as possible.
