Agartala (Tripura): To the delight of the local community, a team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted an inspection at Kailashahar Airport in Unakoti district on Monday.
The delegation, consisting of 11 members, including operational and technical experts, visited the airport to evaluate its current state, with a particular focus on the runway and essential facilities.
According to AAI officials who visited the site, the efforts to reopen services at Kailashahar Airport will occur in two phases. The initial phase will prioritize runway renovations to accommodate small aircraft.
The delegation included three officials from Delhi, three from Guwahati, and five from Agartala.
Prominent members among them were Debdulal Chowdhury, Joint General Manager of the NE region; Tapas Kumar Dey, Joint General Manager (Civil); Manoj Bhardwaj, AGM Civil Headquarters; Dibyojyoti Paul, Senior Manager (CNS); and S.K. Ray, Chief Security Officer and Land in-charge, Agartala.
Official sources revealed that Alliance, the air service provider, is interested in commencing operations from Kailashahar Airport using small aircraft.
During their visit, AAI officials, in collaboration with representatives from the SDM office and Tehsil in Kailashahar, conducted land measurements at the airport. They spent more than three hours at the location and held a meeting with the District Magistrate of Unakoti in the DM office’s conference hall.
The decision to revive flight services at Kailashahar Airport was initiated following the formation of the BJP-IPFT government in 2018.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury have actively championed these efforts.
This development has brought joy to the people of Unakoti district, as Kailashahar Airport has been non-operational since 1992. Once services are reinstated, it is expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost tourism in the state.
