In a major development, Agartala is all set to be connected with foreign destinations through air routes, for the first time. The Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) airport in Agartala will be connected with neighbouring Bangladesh cities through international flight services under the UDAN scheme.
“Finally, the MBB Airport in Agartala is now set to have international flight service with Dhaka and Chittagong”, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb wrote in a social media post on Saturday.
The flight operations in the Agartala – Dhaka – Agartala and Agartala – Chittagong – Agartala international air routes are likely to commence soon. The newly constructed terminal of the MBB is ready to find a place in the International flight route map.
Biplab Kumar who is now campaigning for the party in Manipur hailed the Prime Minister and the Aviation Minister.
He wrote in a post, “My heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji & Civil Aviation Minister Shri @JM-Scindia ji for this initiative to fulfill the dream of the people of Tripura.”
The Chief Minister also pointed out that the proposed international services will also benefit the people of Bangladesh in various ways and will strengthen the cordial relation between the two countries.
Under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagarik (UDAN) scheme, a total of 13 new International air routes were proposed including Agartala – Dhaka and Agartala – Chittagong. The remaining routes connected Guwahati, Imphal and Bhubenswar with different neighbouring countries.
#UDAN-RCS is a first-of-its-kind scheme that aims to create affordable yet economically viable and profitable flights on regional routes along with boosting tourism and creating new jobs in the sector, Civil Aviation Ministry tweeted.
Among other sectors, the international air connectivity would provide Tripura a significant boost to the Tourism sector of the state.
“The proposed international flight service with Bangladesh will surely boost Tripura Tourism and take the State to a new height in terms of air connectivity”, Deb wrote.
