US real threat to global cybersecurity: North Korea

Synopsis by enewstime: North Korea has strongly condemned the United States following the indictment of four of its citizens over alleged digital fraud and money laundering. Calling the charges a “malicious fabrication” and an attempt to tarnish its global image, Pyongyang claimed the U.S. is weaponizing cyberspace for political purposes. A spokesperson from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington of being the real threat to global cybersecurity, asserting that the U.S. is turning the digital realm into a battlefield.

Seoul, July 4, 2025: North Korea slammed US alleging US is the real threat to global cybersecurity as US is weaponizing cyberspace for its political gains and turning it into a battlespace. The accusation came close on the heels of indictment of four Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) citizens in relation to digital fraud.

Reacting sharply, a North Korean spokesperson argued that the true threat to global cybersecurity instability comes from Washington, not Pyongyang. He continued and blamed US for turning cyberspace into “a scene of battle and abusing the cyber issue as a political weapon.”

North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), warned that it reserves the right to respond. Any unlawful attempt to undermine our sovereignty will be met with justified and proportional countermeasures to defend our national interests, the spokesperson warned.

Over the US Indictment of its citizens, North Korea has harshly criticized the United States for indicting four of its citizens over alleged wire fraud and money laundering, calling the move a baseless attempt to defame the country.

The rebuke follows recent charges filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Georgia, accusing four North Korean nationals of orchestrating a digital fraud scheme that reportedly netted over $900,000 in virtual currency. The individuals have been placed on a wanted list.

Describing the charges as a “malicious fabrication,” a spokesperson from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry told the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) that the U.S. is pursuing a “hostile campaign” under the false pretext of a cyber threat from Pyongyang. This is nothing but an unjustified slander that infringes on our sovereignty, the official said.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, the accused North Koreans were allegedly based in the United Arab Emirates, where they posed as freelance IT workers. Between late 2020 and early 2021, they are believed to have used fake identities to gain remote employment with a blockchain company in Atlanta, Georgia, and a virtual currency firm in Serbia.

U.S. prosecutors claim the suspects exploited their positions to siphon off around $915,000 in cryptocurrency, transferring the funds into various external accounts.

North Korea has rejected the allegations, denouncing them as an orchestrated “cyber drama” intended to infringe on its citizens’ rights. “We are gravely concerned,” the foreign ministry official stated, labeling the U.S. action as a “provocation” rooted in political motives.
