Synopsis by enewstime desk: A hush of midnight was torn apart in West Bengal’s Katwa under East Burdwan district as two loud explosions rocked an abandoned house, killing one and injuring three—one of them, Tufan Chowdhury, a local Trinamool Congress associate with a shady past. The explosion destroyed parts of the building, once owned by late Lombu Sheikh.

Kolkata, July 5, 2025: Quietness of late Friday night at Katwa in West Bengal was shattered after a couple consecutive blasts in which one unidentified person died.

Three persons including an alleged associate of the ruling Trinamool Congress Tufan Chowdhury were injured. The blast occurred at an abandoned house. The blast is suspected to have occurred during the illegal production of crude bombs inside the premises.

Local residents told police that they heard two loud, consecutive explosions that shook the area late at night. Alarmed by the sound, many rushed to the site, where they discovered a charred body. Alongside the body was another man, gravely injured but alive.

While the identity of the deceased remains unconfirmed, the injured person has been identified as Tufan Chowdhury, a known associate of the Trinamool Congress in the area. Chowdhury has a reputation for alleged involvement in anti-social activities.

Eyewitnesses reported that two more individuals were present inside the building at the time of the blast. Both were injured but managed to flee the scene. They were later recognized by locals as Safique Mondal and Ibrahim Sheikh.

The explosion’s impact was severe enough to cause part of a wall to collapse and blow off the roof of the structure. The house, once owned by the late Lombu Sheikh, had been unoccupied since his death.

According to initial findings, Chowdhury may have exploited the vacant property for illicit purposes, including assembling crude explosives with the help of local miscreants.

Police arrived at the scene in large numbers following the incident. Tufan Chowdhury was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The charred remains of the unidentified victim have been sent for post-mortem examination. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the activities and the identities of all involved. (Edited)
