In an effort to restore peace and stability in the violence-affected region of Manipur, the Central government has announced the formation of a Peace Committee, with Governor Anusuiya Uikey appointed as its Chairperson.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that the Peace Committee will consist of various stakeholders, including Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, state Ministers, Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly, leaders from different political parties, former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists, social workers, and representatives from different ethnic groups.

According to the MHA, the primary objective of the Committee will be to facilitate the peacebuilding process among the diverse ethnic communities within the state. This will involve fostering peaceful dialogues and negotiations between conflicting parties or groups.

“The Committee aims to enhance social cohesiveness, promote mutual understanding, and facilitate harmonious communication among different ethnic groups,” the MHA added.

During a press conference held in Manipur on June 1, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the formation of a Peace Committee under Governor Uikey’s leadership. The Committee will include representatives from all political parties, as well as members from ethnic communities and social organizations.

Since the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, Manipur has witnessed the loss of more than 105 lives, with over 40,000 people being displaced from their homes. (Edited)
