Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent endorsement of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, a high-level parliamentary standing committee is scheduled to convene today to address the matter.

The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary standing committee on Personnel, public grievances, law, and Justice, led by BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi, will hold a meeting at 3 p.m. to deliberate on the proposal. The committee aims to gather perspectives from various stakeholders regarding the UCC.

Representatives from the Department of legal affairs, the legislative department, and the Law Commission of India have been invited to participate in the meeting.

Currently, personal laws within different communities in India are governed by their respective religious texts. The UCC aims to develop and enforce uniform personal laws that apply equally to all citizens, regardless of their religion, sex, gender, or sexual orientation.

In parallel, the parliamentary panel’s discussion coincides with the ongoing examination of the uniform civil code by the 22nd Law Commission.

The commission, on June 14, invited the general public and recognized religious organizations to share their viewpoints and ideas on the matter. Individuals interested in contributing to the discussion have until July 14 to submit their opinions to the commission. (Edited)
