The Trinamool Congress, the ruling party in West Bengal, is currently grappling with an internal rebellion from two influential party legislators over the selection of candidates for the upcoming panchayat elections scheduled for July 8.

This dissent emerges amidst a series of clashes reported between factions within the Trinamool Congress across different regions of the state, all stemming from disagreements over candidate selection and nomination filing.

The two vocal Trinamool MLAs at the center of this issue are Manoranjan Byapari from the Balagarh constituency in Hooghly district, and Humayun Kabir from the Bharatpur constituency in Murshidabad district.

Byapari has already resigned from two party positions and has expressed his intention to resign from his legislative post as well.

“I also intend to resign from my role as an MLA. However, I am still awaiting the commencement of my pension for the job I left to contest the elections two years ago.

Once I begin receiving my pension, I will tender my resignation as an MLA. I now understand that politics is not a suitable domain for individuals like myself,” Byapari stated.

Although Byapari did not explicitly mention the reasons for his actions, sources close to him indicate that he is deeply upset about the candidate selection process in Hooghly district, particularly the allegations of selling nominations in exchange for money.

On the other hand, Kabir has been more outspoken on the matter. He has directly challenged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, threatening to support independent candidates during the campaign.

Kabir has also accused Saoni Sinha Roy, the Trinamool Congress district president of Murshidabad, of awarding candidature to individuals known for their involvement in extortion activities within the district.

Despite these allegations, the Trinamool leadership seems reluctant to attach significant importance to these claims.

According to party leaders, as the people of West Bengal stand firmly behind the Chief Minister, the statements made by other individuals should not be given excessive attention. (Edited)
