Assam Government Defends Proposed Civil Code Reform
Agartala/Guwahati: The political debate surrounding the proposed civil code reform intensified in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly backed the proposal.
Speaking during a discussion in the House, Sarma said the BJP-led government introduced the Bill to ensure social justice and legal equality, particularly for women belonging to minority communities.
The Chief Minister stated that the government prioritised justice and constitutional protection above electoral considerations. According to him, the administration introduced the proposed legislation during the first session of the Assembly with the objective of strengthening women’s rights.
He also rejected allegations that the reform was politically motivated.
Himanta Highlights Protection for Minority Women
During his speech, Sarma argued that the proposed law would offer stronger safeguards to women in areas such as marriage, inheritance, maintenance, and social security.
He maintained that women from several minority communities often remain vulnerable under different personal laws. Therefore, he said the government wants to create a legal framework that ensures equal treatment and stronger protection for all women.
According to the Chief Minister, the reform seeks to establish fairness and uniform legal safeguards across communities without targeting any religion.
“The objective is justice and equality,” Sarma told the Assembly while defending the proposal.
He further accused opposition parties of creating confusion regarding the intent of the legislation.

The Chief Minister also referred to an earlier debate in the Assembly involving a legislator from Raijor Dal.
Sarma said he had previously informed the House that the government would continue implementing reforms aimed at ensuring equality and justice.
According to him, the administration remains committed to legal reforms that can improve social protection for vulnerable sections, especially women.
He reiterated that the proposed civil code reform does not target any community or faith. Instead, he claimed it seeks to create equal rights and legal clarity for all citizens.
Opposition Continues To Oppose Proposal
Opposition parties, however, continued to criticise the proposal during the Assembly proceedings.
Critics alleged that the proposed legislation could interfere with religious freedom and long-standing cultural traditions followed by different communities.
Several opposition leaders expressed concern over the impact of the reform on personal laws and customary practices.
Despite the criticism, the BJP government maintained that the proposal focuses on constitutional rights, gender justice, and women’s empowerment.
BJP Assures Safeguards for Tribal Communities
The Assam government also assured that the interests of indigenous and tribal communities would remain protected under the proposed framework.
According to BJP leaders, the administration does not intend to disturb constitutional safeguards available to tribal populations and traditional communities in the state.
The government reiterated that the primary objective of the reform is to improve legal protection for women while ensuring equal rights under the law.
Political observers believe the debate over the proposed legislation may continue in Assam in the coming months as both ruling and opposition parties sharpen their positions on the issue.
