November 09, 2018: On second anniversary of demonetization, Tripura Pradesh Congress workers today staged a dharna in front of Reserve Bank of India office in Agartala.
Addressing the dharna, PCC president Birajit Sinha said small traders and industries had suffered the most by demonetization. “Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi during demonetization had said he could change the entire economy in 50 days if he was granted a decent time. We want an answer from him as to whom this decision helped. The entire economic system collapsed after the decision. Petrol and diesel prices are soaring”, he added.
Sinha claimed that Prime Minister had failed to fulfill any of the promises to the people and his demonetization was a total failure and people would not vote the person responsible for bringing demonetization. Among others, AICC secretary Pradyut Debbarman and former MLA Gopal Chandra Roy were present.
Two years ago, on the evening of November 8, 2016, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced on television that all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes were being withdrawn, starting immediately. Even after two years, Modi-led Government and Opposition are in loggerheads over its effects.
District Congress of Unakoti in Tripura also held dharna in front of two banks at Kailashahar. Congress activists held a rally and marched to a local branch of State Bank of India at Thana Road. Party activists criticized the Modi-led Government over demonetization. Activists later rallied to UBI branch at Central Road in Kailashahar. Speaking to media, Congress leaders flayed Modi governtment’s demonetization decision.
