November 03, 2018: State Government’s battle against ganja seems to be entering into a new level as another Police officer, after OC of Bagma outpost, had been suspended last night in North district for alleged connection with contraband item dealers. Superintendent of Police of North district Bhanu Pada Chakraborty had suspended Sub Inspector of Churaibari PS Sukramoni Debbarma on Friday night.
Ironically, earlier on the same day, Churaibari Police led by Sukramoni Debbarma seized around 500kg ganja from a 12-wheeled Lorry (WB59A-5341). Informed sources said, the seizure exposed Sukramoni’s alleged connection with unscrupulous elements. Sources said, Police while conducting search operations, nabbed the driver and his helper. Both the arrested persons were brought to the Police Station. Tellingly, both the driver and his assistant managed to flee from the Churaibari Police Station. Moreover, Sukramoni Debbarma mentioned value of seized ganja as Rs 25 lakhs, however, it is alleged ,actually ganja of Rs 35 lakh was seized.
District Police administration took up the let off seriously and Bhanupada Chakraborty suspended Sukramoni on Friday night.
In recent past, an OC of Bagma Police Outpost Bimal Debbarma was suspended for alleged connection with narcotics dealers. Police raided Bimal’s residence and tight lipped Police administration is probing the case. With Bimal and now Sukramoni Debbarma, it is clear that a section of middle level Police officers are directly or indirectly helping the ganja dealers. However, it is certain that kingpins are still beyond the reach.
“Involvement of middle level officers are gradually coming out. However, these officers are not kingpins – to win the battle against ganja, it is important to nab kingpins. Interrogation and investigation will hopefully expose the people who are controlling the ganja trade”, sources in administration said on condition of anonymity.
