The Forest department of Tripura is keen to resolve issues related to conflicts between wild elephants and humans permanently and soon a team of experts will come here in Tripura to conduct a thorough survey, said Forest Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia on Friday.
Jamatia addressing the Press at the civil secretariat said, “I am aware of the repeated incidents of man-animal conflict at Teliamura. Sometimes, the herds of wild elephants come out in human settlement and cause mass destruction of properties, cropland and sometimes residential areas. We are trying to get hold of the situation. Sometimes, I have personally visited the spots and ensured them proper compensation”.
Talking about solution, he said, now the forest department is contemplating to put forth a permanent solution to this long standing issue. “A team of Wildlife experts from West Bengal and Rajasthan will visit the elephant dominated territories of our state very shortly. They will conduct a survey and accordingly a report will be placed and the department will try to act according to the recommendations. Most probably, once the lockdown is over, they will be reaching Tripura”, said Mevar.
Apart from that, he said, he has personally instructed Chief Wildlife Warden Dr. DK Sharma to take necessary actions to avert recurrence of this kind of situation. Any kind of property loss due to the elephants or other wildlife entities must be stopped immediately for a harmonised co-existence, he added.
