Belonia OC assaulted: 7 held in Tripura
Agartala/Belonia Oct 25: Tripura Police arrested seven persons in connection with attack on OC of the Belonia Police Station.
According to sources, Shibu Ranjan Dey, the OC of the Belonia police station in South Tripura, was brutally assaulted by members of a local club when he and his team attempted to halt a DJ performance during a puja celebration.
Eyewitnesses reported that Dey, who holds the rank of Inspector, was forcibly pulled from the stage and beaten by several club members, an act that has drawn widespread condemnation throughout the state.
Police stated that the clash occurred after Dey’s team intervened to stop loud music that was being played well past the permitted hours.
The assailants not only resisted law enforcement but also launched a violent attack on the OC, creating chaos at the venue.
Following the assault, the injured officer was hospitalized for treatment.
A video of the episode circulated on social media, sparking outrage among citizens across Tripura.
Authorities have filed a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, leading to the arrest of seven club members, including the Secretary of the club and the President and Secretary of the puja committee.
An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, addressing the media during a government function in Agartala, stated that stringent action is being taken against those responsible.
The incident has also drawn sharp criticism from all major opposition parties, including the CPI-M and Congress.

Despite repeated directives from the Tripura High Court, district authorities, and the Pollution Control Board prohibiting the use of high-volume sound systems after 10 p.m., many clubs and puja organisers continue to flout these regulations.
Legal experts noted that exceeding permitted sound limits constitutes noise pollution, which can attract penalties such as fines, seizure of equipment, and even imprisonment. Notably, DJ menace in the State remained mostly under control during the Durga Puja. However, the situation reportedly worsened with addition of bursting crackers during Kali Puja and Diwali.
