Jumbo terror in villages under Teliamura in Tripura continues forcing people to spend sleepless nights. A herd of wild elephants is continuing to descend on farmlands from forests and damage the standing crops almost every night. Not just crops, but one woman was also killed recently by the rampaging elephants in the area.
Man-animal conflict in the area has become a regular incident and the villagers, mostly the small-scale farmers are continuing to suffer.
The Forest department took several steps to prevent elephants from venturing into villages – however, everything proved to be futile in front of the rampaging tuskers.
Jumbo attacks have become almost a routine in several places including Office-tilla, Balucherra, Fulbali-Das-para, Madhya Krishnapur, Krishnapur and Jumbari area under Maiganga and Krishnapur gram panchayats in Teliamura on Wednesday night.
The villagers alleged that every night they inform the forest personnel immediately after elephants stroll into the village and farmlands, but the forest personnel is allegedly lethargic in response.
It is also alleged the forest officials reach the spot after the wild elephants go back to the deep forest after destroying everything.
Speaking to the media, one elderly woman from the affected area said their only source of income is agriculture. She said the farmers of the area have to make a living by selling the agricultural crops in the market.
The villagers vented anger at the concerned department and alleged that the affected farmers do not get compensation from the forest office even after submitting required documents.
“Even as we have submitted relevant documents pertaining to the losses caused by the elephants, no concrete steps have been taken to pay us adequate compensation”, villagers alleged.
