Kalyanpur Boils Over Electrocution Death
Kalyanpur, October 14: A wave of anger swept through Kalyanpur on Tuesday after the tragic death of a young man, allegedly caused by the negligence of Power Corporation employees. The situation turned volatile as enraged locals stormed the Power Corporation’s Kalyanpur office, prompting police to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the agitated crowd. Several people, including police personnel, sustained injuries in the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Ajay Debnath (23), son of Kartik Debnath, a resident of Manipuribasti under West Ghilatali Gram Panchayat in the Kalyanpur police station area. Ajay, who worked as a car driver, was electrocuted while trying to remove a live high-voltage wire that had been lying dangerously close to the ground near his house.
According to local residents, the wire had been hanging loose since before Durga Puja. Despite repeated complaints to the Power Corporation, no action was taken to fix it. On Tuesday afternoon, when Ajay attempted to clear the wire himself, he came in direct contact with it and was fatally electrocuted. Locals rushed him to Kalyanpur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
News of his death spread rapidly, triggering widespread outrage in the area. Hundreds of villagers, along with Ajay’s family members, gathered at the Power Corporation office and staged a massive protest, blaming officials for their negligence. The demonstration soon spiraled out of control, forcing police to intervene. A mild lathi-charge was carried out to disperse the angry crowd and restore order.
Following the incident, Inspector Ashish Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge of Kalyanpur Police Station, confirmed that the police had to act in response to the escalating situation. “Residents became agitated after the death of a youth due to electrocution and staged a protest at the Power Corporation office. In view of the situation, police carried out a mild lathi-charge. The situation is now under control,” he said.
After completion of the post-mortem, Ajay’s body was handed over to his family. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any further unrest.
Locals have squarely blamed the Power Corporation for the tragedy, alleging gross dereliction of duty. Despite repeated warnings about the hazardous wire, no preventive measures were taken. The community now awaits to see whether the authorities will take disciplinary action against the officials whose negligence allegedly cost a young man his life.
