Around 90 thousands Illegal Cough Syrup Seized in Tripura. SDPO Sudhir Kumar Seeks Public Support for a Drug-Free State
Agartala, Oct 17: In one of the largest anti-narcotics operations in recent times, Tripura Police seized nearly Rs 10 crore worth of illegal cough syrup from a railway wagon, exposing a disturbing nexus behind drug trade in the State.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Jirania Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sudhir Kumar, in collaboration with the Railway Police, conducted a successful raid on a goods train arriving in Tripura.
During the operation, officers recovered 600 bags containing around 90,000 bottles of banned cough syrup.
According to SDPO Sudhir Kumar, the consignment’s market value is estimated at Rs 2 crore within India and approximately Rs 10 crore in the international market.
Addressing the media, Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered and an in-depth investigation has begun. He emphasized that no leniency would be shown to those involved and urged the people of Tripura to cooperate with law enforcement efforts to build a drug-free society.
The massive haul has sent shockwaves across the state, raising serious concerns about how such a large volume of contraband could pass through multiple layers of railway security.
Questions are now being raised over possible collusion or negligence within sections of the railway system. Many believe the scale of the operation points to the involvement of a powerful, well-organized network of traffickers operating both within and outside the state.
Notably, IPS officer Sudhir Kumar, who recently completed his probation and assumed charge as SDPO of Jirania, has already earned recognition for leading several successful anti-drug drives in the subdivision.
His proactive approach and quick action in this major seizure have drawn public praise and renewed hope for stronger enforcement.
However, residents and observers have voiced concern about whether such momentum can be maintained in the face of an entrenched narcotics syndicate with far-reaching influence.
The ongoing police investigation is expected to uncover the extent of the network and the possible role of insiders facilitating drug trafficking through the railways.

“With this major breakthrough, the Jirania Sub-Division Police have set a new benchmark in Tripura’s fight against narcotics, ” local people opined.
The operation also serves a strong message for security and railway authorities to strengthen vigilance and prevent the state from being used as a transit route for illegal drugs.
