Agartala (Tripura) July 13: In a heart-wrenching development, the body of Sneha Debnath, a student from Tripura who went missing, was recovered from the Yamuna River in Delhi on Saturday.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the state, leaving the community in deep mourning.

Sharing the painful information, Tripura Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) informed the media today that a swift action by the CMO, in collaboration with the Delhi Police, facilitated an expedited investigation, resulting in the identification and recovery of Sneha’s body.

Preliminary findings suggest that the young student may have taken her own life by jumping into the Yamuna River. However, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

Tripura Chief Minister expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “This is a devastating loss for Sneha’s family and our entire state. My heartfelt condolences go out to her loved ones. I have directed a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind this incident and have instructed Tripura Bhawan in Delhi to extend all necessary support to the family during this difficult time.”

TIPRA Motha Supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma also shared his grief, saying, “My deepest condolences to the friends and family of Sneha. The Delhi Police will issue a formal statement soon, and until then, I urge everyone to refrain from speculation or comments out of respect for Sneha and her family during this challenging time.”

It is worth mentioning that TripuraTimes had earlier reported on July 12 that a 19-year-old girl named Sneha Debnath had been reported missing in New Delhi since July 7. Originally from Sabroom in South Tripura district, Sneha was a student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, affiliated with Delhi University.

The Tripura Chief Minister’s Office took cognizance of the matter and promptly intervened directing the police to initiate swift and necessary action.

According to Sneha’s family, she had spoken to her mother around 6:00 a.m. on July 7 and mentioned that she was heading to Sarai Rohilla Railway Station to see off her friend, Pitunia. However, when her mother attempted to call her back at around 8:45 a.m., Sneha’s phone was found switched off.

The family then contacted Pitunia, only to discover that Sneha had not met her on July 7 morning. Concerned for her well-being, the family traced and contacted the driver of the cab that Sneha had booked.

The driver informed them that she had gotten off near the Signature Bridge area—a location known for being sensitive and lacking adequate surveillance. Alarmingly, none of the CCTV cameras in that vicinity were functioning.

Meantime, condolence messages expressing grief at Sneha’s demise are pouring in.
