Tripura CM Discusses New Medical College, Health Infrastructure Projects with Union Minister J.P. Nadda
Agartala Oct 14: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha met Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss a series of health-related projects and infrastructure issues, including the proposal for a new medical college in the state, officials said.
According to a senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Dr. Saha apprised the Union Minister of the state government’s plan to establish a new medical college at Kulai in Dhalai district — one of Tripura’s aspirational districts — under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
During the meeting, Dr. Saha, who also serves as the state’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, discussed the proposal to set up a Tertiary Ophthalmology Hospital in Agartala and an Immunology Laboratory for Organ Transplant Services at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital.
The Chief Minister requested Nadda, who also heads the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its National President, to allocate financial assistance for the procurement of advanced medical equipment for the Super Speciality Block at AGMC.
He further sought additional funds under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PMJAY) to clear pending reimbursement claims.

Tripura currently has three operational medical colleges — Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Tripura Medical College (TMC), and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC). Among them, TSMC is privately managed, while TMC functions under a society formed by the state government.
Dr. Saha has previously stated that the availability of MBBS seats in Tripura was limited in the past, but now the state offers nearly 400 seats across its three medical colleges.

“There used to be only one seat for Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) earlier. Now, we have a government dental college with 50 seats initially, which has been expanded to 63. We are also working to increase the intake capacity of AGMC,” said Dr. Saha, who is himself a dental surgeon.
“For the 2025–26 academic session, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 150 MBBS seats at AGMC — with 118 reserved for Tripura students, 22 for nominees of the central government, and 10 for students from the Northeast region,” he added.
At present, around 525 students across various batches are pursuing MBBS at the Agartala Government Medical College, Dr. Saha said.
