The massacre in Kalyanpur on April 15, 2000, is one of the darkest chapters in the history of Tripura. Armed with modern firearms, a group of insurgents attacked the helpless villagers of Khas Kalyanpur under Kalyanpur PS on this
date. They fired indiscriminately on the villagers as well as set ablaze the dwellings.
The blood-thirsty insurgents killed 12 persons and several were injured while fire ruined the lives of others who survived the attack, locals remembered. Every year, villagers of Khas Kalyanpur assembled near a ‘martyr plaque’ and offer floral tributes to those innocent villagers who were mercilessly killed by the insurgents. Like previous years, people led by local MLA Pinaki Das Choudhuri observed the 22nd year of the gruesome killing. Das Choudhuri along with other BJP leaders and locals garlanded the martyr plaque and
paid homage to the departed souls.
After paying tributes, Pinaki Das Choudhuri said people will not forget the terror unleashed by the insurgentsd during the Left regime. He urged people of all sections to not to fall into a trap so that divisive forces get fuel to disturb the prevailing communal harmony in the State.
“It is one of those unspeakable brutalities of the insurgents in which helpless people were killed and several were injured. The acts of the insurgents not just killed human
beings – it killed the humanity”, one of the retired teachers of the area said.
Many lamented that the killers got off scot-free and many of them were ‘rewarded’ with ‘surrender packages’ – while the affected families continue to suffer. The people of Kalyanpur would never forgive the killers of innocent villagers and we will continue to condemn those who will take the side of those insurgents turned politicians,
grieving villagers commented.
