Agartala Aug 21: In view of the heavy and unrelenting rainfall over the past few days leading to flood, the state government has ordered the closure of all government, private, and TTAADC schools on Wednesday and Thursday.

This decision, aimed at safeguarding students, was announced by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha through social media.

He also declared that all colleges in the state would remain closed today.

The situation has escalated into a severe crisis as continuous downpours have led to rising water levels in most rivers, causing widespread flooding.

The flood conditions, which have worsened over the past three days, have prompted the Chief Minister to seek additional support from the central government.

In a social media post, Dr. Saha stated, “I spoke to Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah Ji, and briefed him on the severe flood situation. I also requested the deployment of additional NDRF teams to bolster our response efforts. Hon’ble Home Minister assured me of all possible support during this crisis, and I am grateful to him for his assistance.”

In Khowai District, the administration has issued a red alert due to the rapidly rising water levels in the Khowai River.

A social media post from the district administration announced that the movement of vehicles on roads adjacent to river embankments is restricted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The order permits only ambulances, vehicles involved in relief and rescue operations, officials on disaster duty, and those carrying essential items to use these roads. The district administration urged strict compliance with this directive to ensure public safety.

DM Gomati wrote, “Dumbur Dam Alert. Reports as of 8:35 am of 21st August. One flap gate(out of 3 nos) have been opened & water being discharged from the Dam reservoir.

The Assam Rifles has also been mobilized to assist in relief and rescue operations. In a press statement, the Assam Rifles announced that two columns for flood relief were deployed on the night of August 20th in response to a request from the civil administration.

These operations are currently underway in East Kanchanbari of Kumarghat under Unakoti district and in Karbook and Amarpur of Gomati district. Following its tradition of being the first responder, the Assam Rifles is working closely with local authorities to alleviate the suffering of stranded citizens and provide much-needed relief.

The state continues to grapple with the severe impact of the ongoing floods, with authorities and rescue teams striving to manage the crisis and protect the lives and property of those affected.
