Agartala: State Fisheries Minister and concerned officials of Tripura will join representatives from seven other Northeastern states at the Regional Review Meeting 2026 in Aizawl on May 25, where the Centre will review fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairy schemes. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh will lead discussions on infrastructure, livelihoods, sustainable growth and farmer welfare across the Northeast.

Focus on Fisheries, Dairy & Rural Livelihoods

The Government of India has intensified its focus on fisheries, dairy and livestock development in the Northeast, with Tripura emerging as an important stakeholder in the regionโ€™s rural economy transformation.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAH&D) will organize the โ€œRegional Review Meeting: Northeastern Region 2026โ€ in Aizawl, Mizoram, on May 25. The event will bring together ministers, policymakers, senior bureaucrats and beneficiaries from across Northeast India.

Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, widely known as Lalan Singh, will chair the meeting.

Union Ministers of State S. P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian will also attend the programme.

The regional event will include participation from Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim. Officials from the Centre and state governments will join the discussions in hybrid mode, a PIB Press Release mentioned.

The Centre aims to review the progress of ongoing schemes in fisheries, livestock and dairying sectors across the Northeast. Officials will also examine future strategies to improve production, create jobs and strengthen rural income generation.

Tripuraโ€™s participation assumes significance because fisheries and allied activities support thousands of families in rural and semi-urban regions of the state. Experts believe enhanced connectivity, modern farming methods and stronger market systems can further improve the sectorโ€™s contribution to the state economy.

The meeting will emphasize sustainable growth. Authorities also plan to discuss scientific farming techniques, cooperative expansion and technology-driven rural development.

Major Launches Planned During the Event

Several new initiatives will be unveiled during the regional meeting. These programmes target dairy expansion, pig farming awareness and fisheries infrastructure development.

The Ministry will launch a baseline village-level survey to expand the coverage of Multipurpose Dairy Cooperative Societies (MDCS). Officials expect the survey to strengthen cooperative dairy networks in Northeast states, including Tripura.

An awareness film on African Swine Fever will also be released. The disease has affected pig farming in several northeastern states in recent years. The campaign aims to educate farmers on prevention and scientific management practices.

In another major initiative, authorities will release a booklet titled Good Husbandry Practices in Pig Farming. The publication will encourage scientific pig-rearing methods and improved livestock management.

The programme will also witness the launch of MULCO Cow Ghee produced by the Mizoram Milk Producers Co-operative Union Ltd.

Additionally, dignitaries will inaugurate a Mizo Cafรฉ and open an FPO office-cum-sale outlet during the event.

Rs 32.15 Crore Fisheries Projects to be Unveiled

The Union Minister will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for fisheries projects worth nearly Rs 32.15 crore.

These projects fall under two major Central schemes:

Scheme Purpose
Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) Fisheries infrastructure and production enhancement
Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) Aquaculture and fisheries sector modernization

Officials said the projects demonstrate the Centreโ€™s commitment to building a self-reliant fisheries ecosystem in Northeast India.

The government expects these investments to improve infrastructure, strengthen cold chain systems and increase fish production capacity in the region.

Beneficiaries to Receive Support and Recognition

The programme will also feature direct interaction with beneficiaries from Northeast states.

The Union Minister will distribute Fisheries Kisan Credit Cards to eligible beneficiaries. Authorities will also honour successful fisheries startups and cooperative institutions for their contributions to the sector.

Officials believe these recognition programmes encourage entrepreneurship and motivate local communities to adopt innovative fisheries practices.

Northeast States to Discuss Market Expansion

State fisheries ministers and senior officials will hold extensive discussions on strengthening fisheries value chains.

The meeting will focus on:

  • Enhancing fish production
  • Improving market connectivity
  • Reducing infrastructure gaps
  • Promoting fish exports from the Northeast
  • Strengthening cooperative institutions

The Northeast has emerged as a promising region for fisheries and aquaculture expansion due to abundant water resources and rising domestic demand.

Officials will also discuss state-specific challenges and identify practical solutions for sustainable development.

Grassroots Success Stories to Take Centre Stage

The programme will include experience-sharing sessions involving beneficiaries and entrepreneurs.

Members associated with MULCO, beneficiaries under the National Livestock Mission Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP) and fisheries entrepreneurs will share their success stories.

These sessions aim to showcase how government schemes have improved rural livelihoods through fisheries, dairy and livestock activities.

Officials expect such interactions to inspire more entrepreneurs and self-help groups across the Northeast.

Centre Eyes Long-Term Growth in Northeast Fisheries Sector

The regional review meeting reflects the Centreโ€™s broader strategy to transform the fisheries and dairy sectors in Northeast India.

Authorities believe stronger infrastructure, scientific practices and cooperative development can significantly improve productivity and employment generation.

For Tripura, the meeting could open new opportunities in fisheries trade, dairy expansion and rural entrepreneurship. Experts also expect the deliberations to strengthen regional cooperation among northeastern states.

The discussions in Aizawl may shape future policy decisions and accelerate investments in fisheries and aquaculture across the region.
