Incidences of political violence and disturbances were reported by the ruling BJP as well as the Opposition CPIM and Congress on Sunday (January 15).

 

Ruling BJP activists alleged makeshift booth offices and campaign materials were damaged at Abhangchhara under South District and at Dhanpur under Sepahijala district on late Saturday night. At both the places, BJP leaders and supporters held protest marches condemning the act of the unidentified miscreants.

 

Opposition CPIM alleged one of its leaders was attacked by miscreants at Charakbai area in South District today evening. The injured party leader was sent to the GB Hospital in Agartala. The injured CPIM leader – Srimanta Dey, a South District Committee leader was returning after attending a party programme at Muhuripur in South District today. On his way back, he went to the residence of his long time friend at Charakbai and the miscreants barged into the house, ransacked the house and assaulted Srimanta Dey. Later Dey was rushed to the local Healthcare centre from where he was referred to the GB Hospital in Agartala.  

 

In another incident, campaign vans fitted with LED screens came under attack at Mohanpur in West Tripura district today. Mohanpur comes under the constituency of State Law and Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath.  

 

AICC leader Szarita Laitphlang rushed to the spot after receiving the information about the attack. She slammed the BJP for the attack and wanted to know if the Election Commission would take any action to ensure that Congress activists can carry out political campaign in Tripura.

 

Showing the broken windscreen, LED screens and torn posters, Szarita said the real picture of the democracy and law and order situation in the State is crystal clear. Referring to the State Election Commission’s assurance of holding a peaceful election, she asked whether the Commission will take action on this.
