The Tripura government and the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) are taking forward Agartala’s underground electricity cabling initiative to improve power reliability, public safety and urban infrastructure. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced the project’s expected benefits at a Bhoomi Pujan ceremony held at Bardowali Higher Secondary School Ground in Agartala on Thursday, where he also launched the Utility-Led Aggregation Model under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Key Takeaways
-
Tripura has allocated approximately Rs 1,437 crore for Agartala’s underground cabling project.
-
Underground electricity lines are expected to reduce weather-related power disruptions and accidents caused by damaged or fallen wires.
-
The project aims to improve voltage stability, curb electricity theft and support investment, employment and commercial growth.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday said the underground cabling project would strengthen Agartala’s electricity infrastructure, reduce power outages and improve public safety.
He said the initiative would also support Tripura’s economic growth by providing more reliable electricity to industries, businesses, educational institutions and healthcare facilities.
Dr. Saha made the remarks while attending the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for the Agartala Underground Cabling Project at Bardowali Higher Secondary School Ground in Agartala.
He also launched the Utility-Led Aggregation Model under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana at the programme.
The Chief Minister said the project had taken shape through years of efforts by the state government and the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL). He described the initiative as an important step towards modernising the capital’s electricity distribution network.
The project has an allocation of approximately Rs 1,437 crore, Dr. Saha said.
Underground Cables to Reduce Power Disruptions
Dr. Saha said the underground cabling initiative would address residents’ long-standing demand to shift overhead electricity lines below ground. The change would improve the city’s appearance while reducing risks associated with exposed electrical infrastructure.
He explained that underground cables would help maintain a more reliable electricity supply, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Storms, heavy rain and other natural factors often disrupt power services and damage overhead lines. The new system aims to reduce such interruptions.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the project’s potential to prevent accidents involving broken or fallen electric wires. By moving electricity lines underground, the initiative would reduce public exposure to certain hazards associated with overhead cables.
He said the project would make Agartala safer while improving the reliability of electricity distribution.
Project to Improve Urban Infrastructure
The underground cabling system is expected to bring wider benefits to the city beyond power supply improvements.
According to Dr. Saha, shifting electricity lines underground would help improve road space and streamline electricity services. The initiative would also help curb electricity theft and support more stable voltage levels.
These improvements could benefit households and other electricity consumers by making power services more dependable. Better voltage stability would also strengthen the overall performance of the distribution network.
Dr. Saha stressed that the government wanted to develop modern, safe and reliable infrastructure for future generations. He said the adoption of advanced technology remained important for strengthening Tripura’s electricity distribution system.
The project reflects the government’s focus on upgrading essential urban infrastructure and improving the quality of public services.
Reliable Power Supply to Support Economic Growth
The Chief Minister linked improvements in electricity infrastructure to Tripura’s broader economic development.
He said a dependable power supply was essential for attracting investment, generating employment and expanding industrial and commercial activities. Businesses and industries need reliable electricity to maintain operations and support growth.
Educational institutions and healthcare facilities also depend on consistent power services. Reducing outages could help these institutions carry out their activities with fewer interruptions.
Dr. Saha said stronger power infrastructure would contribute to economic growth while improving the safety and reliability of electricity services across the state.

He described the Agartala Underground Cabling Project as a matter of pride for Tripura. Its successful implementation, he said, would mark a significant milestone in the state’s development.
Government Reaffirms Focus on Modern Power Infrastructure
Dr. Saha reiterated the government’s commitment to making Agartala’s electricity supply system more advanced, secure and technology-driven.
The project aims to address existing challenges in the city’s power distribution network while preparing the infrastructure for future needs. Its expected benefits include fewer weather-related disruptions, improved public safety, better voltage stability and more efficient electricity services.
The Chief Minister said the initiative formed part of the broader effort to build reliable infrastructure that could support the state’s development priorities.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar, Tripura Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Pal, and MLA Mina Rani Sarkar attended the programme.
Senior government officials and other dignitaries were also present at the ceremony.
