Angel Chakma Case: Uttarakhand Release Compensation, Dr Manik Saha announces Rs 5 lakh financial assistance for victim’s family
Agartala, Dec 29: The Uttarakhand government has sanctioned immediate financial assistance to the family of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura who died after a brutal assault in Dehradun. The decision was taken on the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, officials confirmed on Monday.
Meantime, Government of Tripura announced a one-time financial assistance of โน5 lakh to the family.
Immediate Financial Assistance Approved
Sources in the Chief Ministerโs Office (CMO) said the first instalment of compensation, amounting to โน4,12,500, has already been released. The cheque has been dispatched to Angel Chakmaโs father, Tarun Prasad Chakma.

In a social media post, CMO mentioned, acting on the directions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand government has approved immediate monetary assistance for Tarun Prasad Chakma, the father of Tripura student Angel Chakma. As part of the relief, the first instalment of โน4,12,500 has already been released to the bereaved family.
Officials said the financial aid has been sanctioned under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, along with the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955.
Following the Chief Ministerโs instructions, the case was routed through the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, and forwarded to the District Social Welfare Officer for urgent approval of compensation to the victimโs family.
Officials stated that the financial aid has been approved under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, as well as the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, which provide relief to victims of caste- and community-based violence.
Fast-Tracked Administrative Process
According to CMO officials, the case was forwarded through the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, to the District Social Welfare Officer for urgent approval of relief, following the Chief Ministerโs directive.
The approval was expedited after a joint inquiry report was submitted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Vikasnagar. Based on the report, the district-level committee sanctioned the financial assistance, leading to the release of the first instalment.
CM Dhami Expresses Condolences, Assures Justice
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami personally spoke to Tarun Prasad Chakma on Monday and expressed deep sorrow over the death of his son. He assured the family of all possible support from the state government.
During the conversation, Dhami informed him that five accused have already been arrested in connection with the case. He added that efforts are under way to apprehend another accused, for whom a cash reward has been announced.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha had earlier discussed the incident with his Uttarakhand counterpart. Dhami informed Saha that the arrested accused have been remanded to judicial custody and that further investigation into the case is ongoing.

Victimโs Background and Circumstances of Death
Angel Chakma, 24, was a final-year MBA student at a university in Uttarakhand and the son of a serving Border Security Force (BSF) constable. He succumbed to his injuries on December 26 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dehradun.

Belonging to the Chakma tribal community, Angel had sustained grievous injuries after being allegedly attacked by a group of miscreants on December 9. Racial slurs were reportedly used during the assault.
